Pucker Up

Aside from sporting the perfect sequin ensemble, playing up your pout is the most important thing you can do on New Year's Eve. Think of your lips as a milkshake. And as Kelis said, my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. So if you want that future husband of yours (who doesn't know he's your future husband) to come in for the real thing at midnight, you've got to be prepared.

Now, I never ever used to be a lipstick girl. I was the biggest tomboy you'd ever meet until about 9th grade when I discovered cute clothes and even cuter boys. And I don't think I even attempted to wear lipstick in public until my freshman year of college. But when I realized how much it transformed my look and feminized my facial features (I look just like my dad) I was hooked.

Over the past few years I've really started to hone in on my favorite lip products. And when I find a product I love, I don't stray. So, I've compiled a complete list of my all-time favorite, tried and true, lip products - from basic balm to the perfect hard-to-find red lipstick. I swear by all of them.

NARS Satin and Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencils. I've been a fan of these since I found out J.Crew's Beauty Director uses them on all of the models for each and every Style Guide. It's like a lip liner and lipstick all in one which makes for super easy touch-ups throughout the day. Within this line I have two favorites: a perfect nude called 'Biscayne Park' (linked here) and a great bright red called 'Dragon Girl' (linked here). Dragon Girl can be seen in a lot of the winter Style Guides.
NARS Semi-Matte Lipstick. This semi-matte lipstick shouldn't be news to very many of you. It's been a cult classic for several years now. I remember being on a wait list a year or two ago for 'Schiap' - the perfect bright pink lipstick pictured above and linked here. They also have an orange-red color called 'Heat Wave' (linked here) that I am 100% obsessed with and love wearing year-round. And there is also a great bright peach called 'Barbarella' (linked here) that is perfect in the summer. The thing I love the most about this specific line of lipstick is their color selection. It's completely unique with a wide range of hues and they really do make a statement.

YSL Glossy Lip Stain. This is the newest lip product in my rotation and I can safely say I'm a big fan right out of the gate. I got the orange-y peach color called '27 Peche Cerra-Cola' (linked here) which is beautiful and suits my light olive complexion perfectly. What I love about it is that it's a stain so it's going to stay on your lips throughout the day. After initially applying it in the morning on my way to work, I only had to re-apply once in the mid-afternoon. Not bad if I say so myself.

Dior 'Addict Lip Glow' Reviver Balm. This has been a staple in my purse for several years now. It may seem silly to pay almost $30.00 for basic balm but this really goes the extra mile. The sheer balm (linked here) actually responds to the color chemistry in your own lips to create a natural and unique hue. It also protects your lips from the sun and keeps them moisturized all day long.

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Color. It's one heck of a name but it is THE red lipstick of all red lipsticks. It has taken me several years to find the perfect shade of red and I am so happy to report that I have found it! The color is called '49 La Petillante' (linked here) and I'm telling you, it's the only classic red lipstick you'll ever need. It's just RED and so rich in color. No orange, pink or purple tints. And aside from the color, it is insanely moisturizing.

YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick. Similar to the Chanel lipstick above, this is one ridiculously moisturizing lipstick in that it literally feels like silk when you put it on. And this may sound strange, but it smells amazing too. I have a beautiful red shade called '25 Red Incodcile' (linked here) that I alternate regularly with my Chanel above and a gorgeous raspberry color that I purchased for fall called '05 Fuschia in Excess' (linked here). I pair both of these with the lip pencils listed below.

YSL Lip Liner Pencil. I just started using a lip liner pencil about six months ago and I have zero clue why it's taken me this long in life to use them. They are amazing. Now I have to be honest and say that I haven't tried any other lipstick pencils out there on the market, but I can say that I'm very happy with these. I have a bold red called '010 True Red' (linked here) that goes perfect with all of my red lipsticks and a light raspberry color called '003 Fuschia' (linked here) that goes great with my pink lipsticks. If you have another favorite lip liner pencil, let me know in the comments below!
