Color Report: Spring 2013

With Spring undoubtedly upon us, I thought it would be a great time to talk about the colors of the season. Although Pantone released their official color report in December, most of us were too busy shopping, traveling, baking and entertaining to even think about espadrilles, highlights, sundresses, and cutoffs. I don't know about you, but once the holidays are over, I'm all about diving into magazines, re-watching fashion shows from the previous fashion week and browsing the web to put lists together of all the Spring fashion goodies I covet!

I present to you, the official color report for Spring 2013.

Out of this palette, THE official color of the year is... Emerald
As seen below in this jaw-dropping blazer from DSquared2.
( And on Beyonce at Obama's 2nd Inauguration )

In true What Would Jen Wear fashion, I've found an example or two to coincide with each color. Some of the colors can be a little confusing when you're simply looking at a piece of paper.

Dusk Blue
Nicole Richie, among other celebrities, sported this hue at the 2013 Golden Globes and she was definitely one of my favorites. This is a beautiful ice-blue color that can literally compliment any skin tone. Think of this color as a step darker and a step brighter than baby blue. I think this color will become a staple in my wardrobe, not only for the Spring, but well into the Winter and beyond.  Not to mention, it's also a popular color for eyes and nails. The dusk blue item i'm lusting over at the moment are these beautiful Lulu Frost for J. Crew earrings.

Tender Shoots
Otherwise known as lime green. If this color is too bright for you to even considering wearing as clothing attire, stick to accessories - bags, jewelry, shoes - there are plenty of great pieces out there to choose from. My favorite is this gorgeous and fun Kate Spade leather satchel in electric lime. But if you are a bright, colorful dresser like me, check out H&M's great lineup of lime shirts and sweaters.

Lemon Zest
Just typing that makes me want a tall glass of lemon water.
Following right along with the previous color, it's not surprising that a bright yellow hue made the list. After all it's spring time - sunshine, flowers, happiness - right? It's easy to incorporate this color into your wardrobe through shoes and accessories, but why not go all out? Nothing screams risk-taker like a bold statement piece that you can keep in your closet forever. And that's why I'm loving this chartreuse jacket from ModCloth

I don't think anyone needs an explanation on this color. Just be sure to not confuse it with the fabric. Although I do love linen fabric, especially in the Spring, it's wrinkle rate is just out-of-the-world annoying. Think about the color of sand, beige or blush - a light light kiss of pink. For pairings, black and white keep it simple and classic. I have to say that silver sparkles and diamonds go great with this color too. Think J. Crew collar necklaces, especially this one. The linen piece of goodness I'm coveting is - surprise, surprise - this amazing J. Crew Collection knit sequin dress. If you're worried this color would wash you out, try some light heels - like the lust-worthy Valentino's below - via.

Poppy Red
As seen on Jennifer Lawrence among other celebrities at the Golden Globes this year.
First of all, this is my favorite color for Lips. Chanel and NARS have great lipsticks that I swear by. I wont use anything else. Secondly, I cannot wait to start adding this color to my closet! I honestly think this is a color anyone can not only wear, but look great in. Poppy Red is a brighter red with just a tiny touch of orange. I had the toughest time picking only one thing for this category, but I went with something I've wanted for a long time - the Tibi Silk Faille Skirt. I love love love love this skirt.

Jessica Alba's Golden Globes dress is a perfect example of this bright orange hue. This is going to be another color with a breadth of options. The first thing I thought of were nectarine-colored jeans, but that's probably because I own a pair. So if you don't - get some! You'll be able to find them almost anywhere. A few good brands to check out: Free People, Joe's Jeans, and 7forallMankind. Aside from denim, the thing I'm coveting in nectarine are these Vince Camuto Sneakers! I picked up my first pair of sneaker pumps in a beige color at Target and immediately fell in love. I think these would log in a lot of miles on my feet this spring. Just go try them on if you haven't before, you'll be surprised.

Monaco Blue
This resembles a lighter version of navy and can include several types of earth tones from chambray to steel blue. I love to see this color paired with all-white ensembles, light pink, heather grey, and of course red. And we all own a chambray shirt right? If not, run - don't walk - to J. Crew and ask for their Keeper Chambray Shirt. So... in an attempt to bring the darker spectrum of this hue into my wardrobe, I've fallen in love with this adorable BCBGMAXAZRIA lace top that subtly incorporates the color. Which is a good thing to do if you want to take some of these colors in smaller doses.

African Violet
Okay, this is by far my favorite color for the season. I'm in love with all things violet - violet hair, violet flowers, violet nail polish, violet denim. I could go on and on. My advice is to pick up anything in this hue, because I honestly couldn't narrow anything down. But here are a few images to give you inspiration. All images found on my Pinterest page.

Grayed Jade
Otherwise known as MINT. This is my official color of the year. I've heard over and over again that Mint is the new white. That means, like violet, anything mint - denim, sweaters, swimsuits, nail polish, accessories - grab it! A good place to start your search is Anthropologie, they always have unique vintage-y finds, including this Viscid Watch I've had my eyes on for well over a year now. I'm also loving this adorable Coletta Bow Blouse from Sosie! I think it would be prefect and breezy for the warm Texas summer ahead!

Although it's mentioned above, I wanted to elaborate on Emerald because it actually contains a wide range of greens and I'm so happy designers are incorporating this color more. And it is literally EVERYWHERE. This version of emerald isn't limited to the deep jewel hue - it actually ranges from greens found in pistachios and Midori to blue-green hues and even a slightly darker mint color. From bold jewelry to gorgeous dresses, this color amplifies any skin tone. There are so many options out there in this color, but I'm loving this beautiful ASOS maxi skirt! And I can't wait to get my hands on a pair of Charlotte Olympia Kitty Satin Slippers - they are so cute!

There they are! The colors to sport this Spring.
I can't wait to start styling outfits with these hues and sharing them with you all!
